Touring Croatia - Part 14

The next morning we had a guided tour to see the old part of Dubrovnik and I always take photos like these just to help me find my way around – getting lost is one of my specialties.

Dubrovnik was founded by Roman refugees and this old fort with its hanging bridge was built to protect Dubrovnik against the Venetian forces.

Inside the Dubrovnik Museum

In 1667 a huge earthquake hit the country and many of the old buildings were destroyed but there was still many more left for us to admire.

We took a glass bottomed boat ride from where we could see the land from a different angle.

And then a little sad history.

Done with the guided tour we traveled to Cavtat and after browsing through the local shops we started cocktail tasting.

Mellow enough after this we sat waiting for our bus before we headed back to Dubrovnik as we had an extra early start planned for the next day.

Touring Croatia - Part 13

Immediately after arriving in Dubrovnik Karin and I hit the streets and walked for what felt like for ages – never bearing in mind that the walk back would be uphill.  We just took in general life lead by the locals.

In a school playground.  We at first thought it was a park until we saw the teachers checking on the kids playing outside.  In darkest Africa schools are surrounded by fences, how were we to know this was not a park?

An oldie parked in a driveway.

Arriving back in our hotel room after the uphill walk back, we just had to put our feet up.

This was also the first hotel where we got a non-smoking room (or so we thought as we had no ashtrays in the room, turned out everyone else had).  We then checked out where the smoke alarm was and positioned ourselves so that this would not pick up any smoke.  No-one as desperate as a smoker who cannot smoke!

After dinner time to relax by the hotel swimming pool.

Touring Croatia - Part 12

We returned to Trogir where we had the rest of the late afternoon and evening to ourselves but I think the church bells sounding at exactly 7 am and 7 pm was something rather noticeable in Trogir.

The next morning after breakfast we left for Dubrovnik passing through Omis crossing the Cetina river.

We stopped for a drink in Makarska - this time coffee for Rina and myself and then headed past the Bacinska lakes.

We reached the border of Bosnia Herzegovina around 1 pm and time for another snack and drink and to look around on our own.

Farming (I think this is how it is called) oysters in the sea.

From here we continued to Dubrovnik.

Touring Croatia - Part 11

More photos taken in Split while on a guided tour and afterwards when we had time to explore on our own. Dead tired and thirsty from walking, we sneaked in a cold beer at this quaint bar while the guide was still talking to the other members of the group.

I don't recall who this was but the statue was destroyed (sliced into pieces) and then restored later.  One can still see the lines where it was cut apart.

I rubbed the statue's golden toe wishing all my wishes would come true!
Washing lines too high up to reach from the floor therefore working with a pulley system between neighbors.  So what if I decided I didn't want to do washing when she wanted to?

Fresh produce market.

I think we're done in Split.

Touring Croatia - Part 10

I start every new week with so many plans of what I want or need to do but sadly end every week with very little to show.  Today however I've already moved mountains except that I am still in my PJ's!  Well getting dressed was never on any of my lists.  Freezers and fridge wiped, cleared of all unused oldies and wiped clean and I've already tidied and repacked 2 cupboards but now on to another thing on my list..... my Croatia photos.

Gosh I regret having taken so many photos - if only my memory was better but I do remember it was an amazing trip!

The next morning we went on a day tour to Split about 40 km from Trogir.  I took a couple of photos through the bus window to show Karin (who slept in the bus) afterwards.  Karin if I forgot to show you, here they are now.

We first had a guided tour before we could explore the city on our own.  This was Diocletian's Palace around which Split was build.

Inside the basement of the old palace - notice the holes in the basement roof?

The upper level of the palace was destroyed and as people started building new houses, they simply made holes in the floor and dumped all their unused building materials into the basement.  These were later cleared to restore the basement.

A statue of the infamous Diocletian.
