Chevron quilt with skull prints

I received this quilt on Tuesday and got it loaded but then cricket happened and hubby and I went for our weekly pensioner's meal and I didn’t get to do much.

Finished it on Wednesday and this quilter, not only pays for her quilts but occasionally brings me a bottle of wine.  As if not more than enough she had her birthday today and guess what?  After working a full day, then exercising, she still took the time to drop off some birthday goodies for us.  As said previously, not who you are but who you know and I know amazingly kind people with even greater hearts.

Her quilt had a skull print fabric in between the pastels and we decided to do the rose design on this.  Thinking of the Guns ‘n Roses band and hoping the recipient would see it this way.

Receipt roll, turned scrappy quilt finished

Our only grandson has very dramatically changed his own name to “Sonic” and don’t you dare call him Logan as he will flatly ignore you.  His mom even told us she lost him in a play area and had to walk around calling “Sonic, Sonic” between all the people in order to find him.  For Halloween this year he will obviously dress as Sonic and I had to fix the reddish shoes his parents could find to look like those of Sonic.  Luckily, I did a shoe covering course many moons ago and knew Bostic Clear would be the answer.  These shoes however are made of stretchy fabric, so I had to improvise to keep the tops fairly straight and for that light-bulbs had to come to my rescue.  I am not sure if or for how long these would last but hope for the best.

Speaking of grandson, he asked his parents for evil cookies.  Dumfounded, they had no idea what he wanted and took him to the pantry where he showed them Ginger biscuits.  Apparently, these are evil because of the burning sensation.

When we purchased our house in 1994, we had these broken tiles in the showers and not being too observant, these never bothered me.  It served its’ purpose and I was happy.

This week however hubby decided to give the shower in the main bedroom a facelift, initially only starting with wanting to redo the grout but one thing led to another and pretty soon, we had new mosaic tiles not only in the shower but finishing off other areas too.

Just seeing this man in action enervates, me, he just never stops but seeing the flowers bloom in the garden, is such a pleasure.

I’ve had no customer quilts this week which allowed me to finish the last 16 blocks of my receipt roll scrappy quilt, finish the top and get it on the frame for the actual free motion quilting and this is a big old bugger.  A full 96” wide and long.

Sunday we are having all the kids and their little ones over for lunch and although grateful for the rain, I hope we have a lovely day for the youngsters to swim.

Another fun week as a pensioner

I know I’ve said this several times to anyone whether prepared to listen or not but I love being on pension and it has officially been 7 months now. I am most grateful for being able to be here while I still have the health and energy to enjoy doing things.  I am thinking of those poor people who literally have to work until they end up in the hospital and the only rest, they ever had was the time in hospital before dying. This sadly is not necessarily due to bad planning on their part, life happens and takes its toll, not always for the better.  Referring to seniors whose kids died in an accident and then had to take care of the little ones, paying for the rest of their upbringing and not having anything left for their old age.  Life is not a game and I dearly appreciate the hand dealt to me.  Yes, one has to budget like crazy and simply being in need of something or wanting to change up something does not mean getting to the shop to buy it.  Suddenly you have to look at your budget, can we afford it this month or did we already spend the allotted money for that expense?  If spent, it means waiting another month BUT the quality of life is just so much better.  Gone are the days of deadlines, having to deal with staff absence or BBEEE crap.  You plan to do what you want when you want and if not finished, not the end of the world.  Hubby and I spend much more time together, even playing the same game on our phones when we take a time-out from whatever we were busy doing.

I only had one customer quilt to do the past week but it was such a lovely scrappy quilt that I’ve decided to make this pattern somewhere in the future.  I especially like the quilters’ decision to use brown as sashing’s.  I tend to always opt for black, white or cream. She used telephone directory paper to sew her coloured strips to before adding the sashing.

I used the open curl design on this which too was a part of the motifs in the Adria Good course I did.

Then last Sunday my daughter and I along with her little one went for lunch at an animal farm for kids and she told me she’d like to have a duvet cover with dinosaurs for the little ones’ bed.  Now I’ve never made a quilted duvet cover but as the saying goes “it’s not who you are but who you know” and luckily, I know a quilter who makes these all the time and she was so kind to drop one off at my house for me to take photos and thoroughly study.  After lunch I dug through my fabric and low and behold I found a dinosaur print.  Then I wanted to finish it before the little ones’ second birthday and party yesterday and burning a little late-night oil and getting up earlier I did it.

On this, I did another of Adria’s designs called the Wiggle Worm.

Oh, and hubby and I went for our first pensioner's meal on Tuesday.  Now, this is the part of budgeting that I love most.  Checking to see where and when you can get the best deals on most everything and the funny side to this was that this little restaurant only stays open until 6pm.  So here we went for supper already at 5pm and when we got there and I wanted to order wine, they informed us they do not serve alcohol.  I guess pensioners are not supposed to consume anything stronger than coffee.  So, we ended up spending exactly 45 minutes, finished our meal without anything to drink and returned home but the amount of food at that price was not to say ‘no’ to.  They even added us to their ‘What’s App’ list for future invites!  I also added an app on my phone informing me of the best deals at restaurants close to us.  I obviously lead a totally different life now.

Thursday, we drove to another friend’s house simply to drop something off and hubby in his dirty gardening gear initially didn’t even want to get out of the car.  Well, it didn’t happen and we sat chatting (with wine this time) until 9:30pm.  They too are beginning to think of going on pension but I don’t think they are quite ready to live on less but in the same breath mentioned they had a terribly bad year with the business and I couldn’t help wondering if things did not turn around soon if they’d ever feel ready.  I did however remind them that the level of stress that they’re undergoing is not worth the quality of life they could have even with less money.

Friday evening the older kids came over.  My daughter-in-law had a hectic Saturday planned (work and the little one having an open day at his new school) and was in need of wine.

Saturday, we had the youngest grandbaby’s second birthday party and the parents also decided to combine this with her dedication ceremony.  The two grandfathers did this with one reading from the bible and the other one doing the prayer and blessing.  I loved this intimate and private way of doing this.

With hubby playing golf this morning, I plan to clean my sewing room from top to bottom.  Yes, it is included in the weekly cleaning but it wouldn’t damage anything if it gets an additional proper treat.

A mid week post

Sadly, I couldn’t get a dentist appointment on Monday as I hoped, so I had to walk around with this burning tongue until this afternoon.

A quilter fetched her quilts on Monday evening and after having read the message from another quilter incorrectly, I told the first quilter to sit with me and have wine until the next quilter arrived.  Well, she never did because of me not reading her message properly, so the other poor quilter simply just had to sit and have wine.

I got these two adorable kiddies quilts for boys early on Tuesday and the quilter did not want anything floral quilted on them, so for the first, I chose loops and bubbles.

For the second quilt, I decided on clouds.  Both these motifs were from my second course by Adria Good.

Hubby and I went grocery shopping this morning.  Even though I have our meals delivered, they sadly don’t do breakfast and lunch or supply cleaning goods and these are always needed.

My dentist appointment happened this afternoon for which I am thankful and we were invited for supper tonight…. A good thing seeing that we didn’t have water since late morning, luckily, I cleaned the house way before whatever caused the water to disappear.

What happened to last week?

I am not sure why I never got to writing my blog.  Nothing out of the order happened but for some reason, I just never got to blogging.  We had a lovely long weekend, then started the week as usual, so I really cannot explain.  Oh yes, I did have a couple of lovely visits with friends and even a friend I haven’t seen in years and we had plenty of catching up to do but surely that could not have been the only reason as I have people over almost every day.

Well, I haven’t been totally idle too and although I didn’t have much quilting to do the two quilts, I received was both rather large ones.  One was in mostly greens and the other more pinkish.  The quilter requested edge to edge quilting and will be fetching her quilts today.

I also finished my second course by Adria Good and now have a second motif sample book.

As for today, I am waiting for the dentist to open as I have lost a filling on Sunday.  We spent the day with the younger kids at Jumpers Lane and saw some amazing Koi fish on display and as I started to chew my food….  Oops, out came the filling, leaving me with a terrible sore tongue from rubbing up against the tooth.
