New is
definitely not always better. I got a
new desktop computer; I really needed it.
It came with Windows 8 and as fellow quilter, Wilna Geel, says “why
change a recipe that works”. I
struggled, no….. I still struggle but I've already moaned about this.
With the new
computer I obviously had to purchase Microsoft Word and guess what? …… a NEW version.
Initially not
too much trouble using it apart from the fact that Outlook has now added
several extra eggs to this recipe that doesn't make the cake taste any better and I’m keeping my technological advanced son
rather busy trying to get things to work ‘as they used to’.
Then it turned
2013 and on my blog I have a page “Completed quilts/projects” which I use to
motivate me and have proof of what I've accomplished during a year. So I needed to add a new year and this is
where the snail got onto the Gilette blade – I just couldn't do it. Still reluctant to believe that I have become
this forgetful/ignorant in one year I admitted defeat and called the help of my
blonde.
Now I have to
give you a little background about this creature I gave birth to and
raised. She was the child, unlike her
brother who trusted me with any and everything, who would “do it myself” and
during her school years I thought this to be great as at least for one child I didn't have to write essays (and got terrible marks) or do school
assignments. This however now backfires
badly.
Whenever I need
her help (mostly on the computer) she’ll be saying something like “now come
stand here and I’ll show you and then ‘you do it yourself’."
So when I asked
her help this time I made it very clear that she had to DO it and not just show
me just as I would hem her pants when she needed it and not just show her to do
it herself. So all misconceptions out of
the way, she got seated behind my NEW computer with NEW Microsoft Word and
simply had to try to make an ‘old’ 2013 heading. She sat and sat some more and all the while I
was starting to feel much better about my own abilities and after searching Google she
calmly informed me that the NEW Microsoft Word cannot do it! Added eggs to Outlook and taken away eggs in
Word – two miserable cakes in one day!!
Fortunately my laptop
still has an older version of Microsoft Word so I had to create the date there
and I have to agree with Wilna……. Why O Why???
Off to breakfast
with friend Karin, hoping this will get rid of my frustrations!

My sister upgraded to Windows 8. She admitted it wasn't for old dogs to learn how to use it. I had problems with my computer and the tech I talked to said he wouldn't upgrade. He said everyone is having trouble. Mine is still XP so I will work with mine for awhile and then go to Windows 7. I hear your pain and suffering. Chris
